Prainha: A paradise for surfers & nature lovers

Prainha is possibly the most beautiful beach of Rio de Janeiro, thanks to its outstanding natural beauty. Located in an unspoiled and protected area (Grumari APA – Environmental Protection Area) and surrounded by hills covered with tropical rainforest, prainha  is a paradise for surfers and nature lovers. The big and tubular waves are described as the best in Rio (many national and international surf competitions are held here) and the beach keeps a wild nature. There are a couple of kiosks where you can have sandwiches, juices and açaí, but prainha is still a secluded spot. Quite crowded on weekends but very quiet in weekdays. Come in the morning, because the sun hides behind the mountains in mid-afternoon.

Location. Prainha is located in Rio de Janeiro’s west side, past Barra da Tijuca and Recreio dos Bandeirantes. Access to the beach is on Avenida Estado da Guanabara.

Getting there. There is a service of “Surf Bus” doing the following stops: Largo do Machado (Flamengo) – Botafogo – Copacabana – Ipanema – Leblon – São Conrado – Barra da Tijuca – Recreio dos Bandeirantes – Macumba – Prainha. Phone: +55 21 8702-2837.

  • Leblon Beach: An oasis of peace in Zona Sul

Leblon Beach: An oasis of peace in Zona Sul

The beach of Leblon is the west continuation of Ipanema one, but with a different touch: less crowded and much more quiet, overtopped by the stunning Dois Irmãos Mountain. The beach is bordered by a very wealthy neighborhood and stretches from Jardim de Alah (The Garden of Allah) and Visconde de Albuquerque canal to Mirante do Leblon, a charming viewpoint (where you can find a standard kiosk overlooking Leblon and Ipanema beaches). On the beach you will see people doing some form of sport and kids playing in the wide and colorful enclosed playground on the sand (Baixo Baby, situated at Posto 12). The beach is bordered a promenade, a bicycle lane connecting Leblon to Ipanema and Avenida Delfim Moreira, that on weekends is closed to traffic.

  • São Conrado & Pepe Beach: At the shadow of Gávea Rock

São Conrado & Pepe Beach: At the shadow of Gávea Rock

São Conrado is a wide sandy beach stretching between Leblon and Barra da Tijuca. It is a very quiet neighborhood with a breathtaking view of Dois Irmãos Mountain and of the magnetic Pedra da Gávea (Gavea Rock). The strong water swells make of São Conrado the perfect beach for surfing the waves. On the beach is also the hand gliding and paragliding company, where you can book your flight over Rio. The beautiful bicycle path running along the beach is lined with kiosks.

  • Joatinga Beach: The secret jewel of the coast

Joatinga Beach: The secret jewel of the coast

This tiny beach is a hidden jewel surrounded by a powerful nature. Heavenly located in Joatinga, it is quite difficult to reach (therefore extremely quit). The waves and the current are strong, so you will see more surfers than swimmers here. If you don’t surf, don’t worry: the real magic of this beach is the outstanding natural location, with a view of the islands, the fishing boats on the horizon and the sun turning gold the sand.

  • Copacabana Beach: The most famous beach in the world

Copacabana Beach: The most famous beach in the world

Considered one of the most famous beaches in the world, Praia de Copacabana is nicknamed the “Little Princess of the Sea”. Its ancient name Tupi was Sacopenapã: “the sound and the flapping wings of the herons” and its golden age was the 30’s through the 50’s, when Copacabana Palace was the meeting pont of international jet-setters. The 4 km sandy beach, stretching from Posto 2 (lifeguard watchtower 2) to Posto 6 (lifeguard watchtower 6), is bordered by two historic forts: Fort Copacabana (1914) and Fort Duque de Caxias (1779). Along the beach runs the well-known promenade representing ocean waves (designed by the Brazilian architect Roberto Burle Marx and achieved in 1970). Have a coconut water at one of the many kiosks and enjoy the wonderful view of Rio bay. Enjoy the bicycle lane skirting the beach, rent a sun umbrella and, if you wish, have a swim (but the water here is not the best: Copacabana is closer than Ipanema to the bay). Come here in weekends, when Avenida Atlântica is closed to traffic and Cariocas enjoy the promenade by bike, skate or rollerblades. This is also the place to be at New Year’s Day, when more than 2.000.000 people gather here to party (twice as many than there were on February the 18th 2006, when the Rolling Stones had their legendary concert in Rio).

  • Praia Vermelha (Red Beach): At the shadow of the Sugarloaf

Praia Vermelha (Red Beach): At the shadow of the Sugarloaf

With an unforgettable view of the Sugarloaf, Praia Vermelha is possibly the most idyllic beach of Rio. This tiny oasis of quietness and beauty , so called because it becomes flushed with red at sunsets, is located between Morro da Urca and Morro da Babilônia, in the very safe area of Urca. Being within Guanabara Bay, it is seldom crowded. The water is not the best, but the natural scenario is simply breathtaking. Avoid the bar and restaurant of the beach (low quality, high prices) and buy a coconut water at one of the kiosks. Then relax on the sand and just enjoy.

  • Ipanema Beach: Enjoy the Sexiest Beach in the World

Ipanema Beach: Enjoy the Sexiest Beach in the World

Considered the sexiest beach in the world, Ipanema became popular thanks to the bossa nova song The Girl from Ipanema, by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes (1962). Delimited by the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers Mountain) and Ponta Arpoador, the beach is divided into stretches of sand called Posto. Posto 9 (9th lifeguard tower) is the coolest and more attractive space, the one where you can admire the most beautiful bodies in Rio. People come here every day to hung out, play football, volleyball or footvolley (a freestyle mix of the two). Come here in day time, have a swim, rent a sun umbrella with deck chairs or drink a beer (you can buy one at one of the many kiosks along the beach). And don’t miss Ipanema during weekends, when the road along the beach (Avenida Vieira Souto) is closed to traffic: among skates, bikes and rollerblades, you will experience a primary side of Carioca lifestyle.

Security tips: don’t leave your stuff unattended while you swim and don’t walk on the beach at night.
