    Zuka: Discover the design food

Considered one of the best restaurants in Rio, Zuka is a trendy place offering design food: good ingredients and a meticulous attention to the presentation of the food (here a brochette can be a sculpture!). The chef, Ludmilla Soeiro, creates grilled specialities and fancy menus, divided in food from the sea, the heart and the sky. Sophisticated and contemporary, Zuka cuisine is perfect to go with a bottle of good wine. Prices are average to high (a good option is to have lunch in weekdays, taking advantage of the convenient office lunch).

Aprazível: Have a romantic dinner in the trees

Idyllic, sophisticated and unexpected, the romantic restaurant Aprazível, in Santa Teresa, sits on a hill overlooking Rio and is built among huge tropical trees, so you feel like eating in a treehouse. Ask a table on the panoramic terrace (you need to reserve) and try a rosted palm heart or a typical moqueca. Food is delicious and prices are moderate to high. But the atmosphere is priceless, with a French touch and an artistic feeling.

  • Jobi: Have a beer at a typical “boteco” in Leblon

Jobi: Have a beer at a typical “boteco” in Leblon

Another well known botequim in Leblon, opened in 1948 and very popular among carioca. Have a typical beer on tap (chop), finger food and mingle with locals after dinner. Among the appetizers we suggest fried cassava with jerked beef. Take your time, because unlike other boteco in the area, Jobi doesn’t have a closing time: they just go on until the last customer leaves the place (and in Rio it can be very late!).

Opened in 1848, Braca (as it is nicknamed by Cariocas) has been listed as the best bar in Rio by The New York Times. • Samba: The music coming from Africa

Samba: The music coming from Africa

Syncopated rhythm, hip movements, black roots: this is samba, the legendary music from Rio de Janeiro. Samba was born in “Little Africa”, a poor area of Rio, between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Here the descendants of the black slaves coming from the north, especially Bahia, carried with them a unique cultural heritage: the Candomblé– an African religion where drums and handclaps have a ritual importance. All this has been translated into music by brilliant musicians as Pixinguinha, a pioneer of Samba.

The first official samba song is considered to be Pelo Telefone (“By Phone”), recorded in 1917 and composed by a collective of musicians. But only in the roaring 30’s samba literally blew up, thanks to the radio. Samba became more melodic, under the name of samba-canção (“samba song”). It is the time of Noel Rosa and Ary Barroso; Carmen Miranda made known to the world the samba, thanks to her Hollywood films.

Another big revolution comes in the 50’s, when samba-canção meets Jazz. Artists such Antonio Carlos Jobim and João Gilberto renovated the tradition and created the Bossa Nova. But this is another story (an inspiring one). In the same period samba was also revitalized by Rio communities (favelas): their samba de morro (“samba from the hill”), focusing on the beat, finally became the official music of Brazilian carnival.

Samba de Roda, a samba danced in circle typical of Bahia, became a UNESCO Heritage of Humanity (category “Oral and intangible expressions”) in 2005.

Copacabana Palace: Have a drink at the luxury swimming pool of this legendary hotel

Copacabana Palace passed into legend as the first luxury Hotel in South America. With its 1920s white neo-classical façade, it opened in 1923, becoming soon after the temple of the roaring 20s in Rio, when gambling was legal in Brazil. Designed by the French architect Joseph Gire, it is now a very expensive hotel ideal for a drink. Take a caipirinha at the lavish bar of the swimming pool and think that before you a lot of celebrities did the same. For exemple Marilyn Monroe, Nelson Mandela, Madonna, Walt Disney, Rolling Stones, Rita Hayworth, Brigitte Bardot, Michael Jackson, Diana and Luciano Pavarotti.
